Christmas Wishes from Erwin Cain

Below is a letter from Erwin Cain wishing all a wonderful Christmas. I asked him if I could share. Merry Christmas! Let's hope and pray this season will usher in a great 2010...including new leadership in Austin and Washington!

As I have been out campaigning on peoples’ doorsteps during this crisp weather I am often invited inside to shake off the chill. Folks in East Texas are thoughtful that way. This unusually cool weather makes a warm hearth and home even more inviting. When I find myself growing weary of walking neighborhoods in the cold, I reflect on the exploits of some of our founding fathers who suffered and sacrificed in much harsher conditions. For freedom to them was much more important than comfort.

It was a driving snowstorm on Christmas Day in 1776 that gave cover for General Washington’s nighttime crossing of the Delaware to attack the Hessian garrison at Trenton. It was so bitterly cold that the river was swollen with ice. The crossing was treacherous. Yet the brave and desperate acts of those 2500 men turned out to be one of the greatest battles of the Revolutionary War and changed the course of world history.

To do that today we would don heavily insulated gear. Not so with Washington’s army. Many did not even have adequate shoes. Major James Wilkinson, who was on his way to join Washington, found his route easy to follow because, "there was a little snow on the ground, which was tinged here and there with blood from the feet of the men who wore broken shoes."

When I think of those stalwarts and their sacrifices, my soul is warmed and my spirit is lifted. The patriots who fought in that battle were committed to winning our freedoms despite great personal peril. Those heroes taught us that freedom sometimes comes at a great cost.

So I fight on.

I also think of another hero. The Savior of the world could have come in any fashion He chose. Many thought Jesus would come with his legions of angels and be the conquering King. Yet in His wisdom, He came as a vulnerable child to a young and poor couple from a nondescript town called Nazareth in a backwater country called Israel. The odds could not have been more stacked against Him. Yet through His life as a suffering Servant He proved that nothing was too daunting to prevent bringing peace to Earth and goodwill to man. For the sheer joy of bringing the love of God to man He “endured the cross, despising the shame.” What a price He paid for our freedom! We know from that sacrifice that when the Son makes us free we are free indeed!

We are truly blessed by a loving God who showed us that no sacrifice is too great for love and liberty. I pray that during this Holy season, you and your family are enveloped in the richness of God’s love and the gift of His Son. May you be encouraged and emboldened by that love throughout the upcoming year.

I wish you and your family a very Merry and Blessed Christmas!
